The High Court of England issued a new warrant for Mukhtar Ablyazov’s arrest

Almaty, July 25, 2019. – JSC BTA Bank announces that on July 16, 2019, Judge Teare, the High Court of England extended the Committal Warrant issued in February 2012 against the former Head of the Board of Directors of BTA Bank - Mukhtar Ablyazov for 22 months for contempt of court.

The Committal Warrant is another official document prescribing to the police authorities and/or court personnel to arrest M.Ablyazov and take him to prison to serve his sentence if he enters the UK. The document is valid for two years, after which it will be extended for another term. The Bank carries out regular work to extend the abovementioned document.

We shall remind you that the main the Committal Warrant was issued on February 16, 2012 by the High Court of England. M. Ablyazov repeatedly gave false statement, presented false documents to the court, by means of which assets and transactions were concealed from the Bank, and also he did not appear at court sessions. In this connection, the court decided to sentence M. Ablyazov for contempt of court to imprisonment for the total period of 22 months. 

Also, on July 3, 2019, in the case of the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of BTA Bank JSC on the laundering of stolen funds through the purchase of real estate in the U.S., magistrate Judge of the U.S. Catherine Parker said that M.Ablyazov was "not very sociable" during the trial in France, in which he claimed that he does not remember his own phone number and did not answer the question of whether he had used the services of an accountant since he fled Kazakhstan in 2009.

"Ablyazov's insubordination is particularly worrisome, given that the lack of evidence is the essence of his defense," Parker said in her order dated July 3. "This refusal is deliberate.

Judge Parker confirmed that the court has not yet received any documents from M. Ablyazov, although he claimed that all of them are available to his lawyer in New York. The judge also warned Ablyazov not to conceal any evidence in the process of his defense confirming the international status of the criminal organization.
